Staff and Pupils at Merryfields School in Wolstanton are holding a Garden Party today to celebrate the official opening of their new playground and a new three-classroom extension to the school.
The three-class extension will enable the school to accommodate growing pupil numbers, providing a bright and welcoming learning environment for staff and pupils and providing value outdoor play areas.
Construction works were carried out by educational building specialists Fords of Blythe Bridge, who designed and built both the main extension and the new playground area.
The new 1200 square metre playground features play equipment designed specifically to support the sensory requirements of pupils, to improve balance and aid muscle coordination. Staff at the school worked closely with Fords of Blythe Bridge in the design stages to ensure maximum benefit to pupils from the sensory equipment.
Deputy head teacher Sarah Latham said: “We’re thrilled with the new classroom space, which will vastly improve teaching and learning in school, and also with the playground area, which provides a really important sensory experience for pupils, and which has a direct impact on their ability to learn in the classroom environment.”
Headteacher Sarah Poyner added: “The garden party is our way of celebrating these fantastic new facilities, of saying thank you to all those involved in the works and to those who have generously donated and helped raised money for the playground equipment we have so far.
We still have a long way to go in terms of fund raising, and we hope everyone at the garden party will see the value of the sensory equipment and the real benefit it brings to pupils.”
The school is holding a cake sale and tombola amongst other activities on the day to raise further funds for upcoming projects at the school, such as the creation of a library, specialist therapy room and sensory area.
