Staff and Pupils at Merryfields School in Wolstanton are holding a Christmas Party today, with Santa and his helpers paying a special visit to celebrate the official opening of a new three-classroom extension and extensive refurbishment works to the school.
The £750,000 project was carried out by educational building specialists Fords of Blythe Bridge, who designed and built both the main extension and new playground area, as well as carrying out all refurbishment works.
The three-class extension will enable the school to accommodate growing pupil numbers, and was specifically designed for pupils with special educational needs, with direct access to outdoor play areas, full height windows to provide a bright teaching environment, a new library area, and wider corridors to allow free movement.
The building works have transformed teaching and learning at the school, as Deputy Head teacher Sarah Latham explains: “Pupils have a light and airy learning environment and a lot more space to move freely and independently. They are calmer and less anxious, and are enjoying their learning.
“We now have a lot more space for specialist equipment, which is improving teaching. We have a new library area which is aiding their learning and promoting reading for enjoyment, and the extension also houses a specialist sensory room for pupils with sensory impairments, helping us to deliver the very best teaching for all our pupils.”
Luke Ford, director at Fords of Blythe Bridge added: “It’s great to see the huge benefit the new classrooms have brought to the school – the staff and pupils are thrilled with the transformation! We are delighted to have helped make such an improvement to teaching and learning at Merryfields.
