A major refurbishment of an existing transport depot for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue is enabling the fire and police services to carry out maintenance works on a single site, making significant efficiency gains and cost savings for both organisations
Fords of Blythe Bridge was selected as principal contractor to carry out the multi-phased construction project, which involved the creation of new maintenance bays and industrial roller doors to accommodate additional service vehicles, the creation of a new first floor mezzanine to provide office and conference facilities, and the remodelling of ground floor operational areas.
The project included the provision of a new lift to the first floor, external staircases, fireproof glazing and a high level of sound protection to ensure the office space was suitably protected against the noise from the workshop area. Full-wall folding acoustic partitions were also installed into the first floor meeting rooms to provide flexible options for hosting meetings and conferences, giving the option of having three break out rooms or one large conference area.
Externally, additional secure perimeter fencing and automated gates were installed on site to prevent both unauthorised entry and exit, ensuring not only a secure site, but also the security of vehicles at the depot.
The project was carefully planned and phased at all stages, as the transport depot remained a live site throughout the project with engineers, mechanics and office staff working as normal servicing fire vehicles on site. As such, health and safety was rigorously managed to ensure the well-being of everyone working at the depot.
The project was delivered on time and on budget, despite the challenges of working on a live site, and the client was delighted with the end result and the operational efficiencies it is now delivering.
