The popularity of the nursery provision at Rocester Village hall led to Staffordshire County Council appointing Fords of Blythe Bridge to design and build a new standalone nursery building on the village hall site.
The purpose of this educational development project was to help accommodate increasing numbers of children and ensure early years care could continue to be provided in the local community.
The new building was specifically designed to best meet the day-to-day requirements of an early years environment. The large multi-use play area features a sound-proof folding partition, which can be used to create two distinct play areas, thereby enabling nursery staff to provide structured play and learning for different age groups when required.
The new build also features a kitchen in which fresh food can be prepared and served through an integral serving hatch. In addition there are infant and accessible toilet areas, resource and break-out rooms, as well as office and storage space.
Externally, Fords of Blythe Bridge designed and installed a bespoke soft play area which is accessed from the main playroom, enabling free-flow for children between the internal and external play areas.
The timber-framed, brick clad building combines the superior thermal performance and energy efficiency of a timber build with the aesthetics of a heritage build, and the clients were delighted with the end result. External improvements to the main village hall were also carried out within the project, bringing further benefit for the village.
Fords of Blythe Bridge was appointed because of the company’s experience of carrying out heritage construction work in the past, including for English heritage and The National Trust. Working in a conservation area, all external aspects of the building had to be carefully designed and approved. This included heritage style brickwork sympathetic to the surrounding architectural styles, a traditional slate roof, cast guttering and traditional wooden sash windows.
